As it was the Giniemonster who asked me to do it, here goes:

1. Up to the age of 12 my surname was Reynolds. I was adopted, which meant I became German, and got a silly surname which just so doesn't go with my first name.

2. When I was 16 I finally got the chicken pox, but my mum didn't believe me and said something about hormones and spots. She sent me to the cinema with chicken pox and only believed me when my brother got them a few weeks later.

3. I used to compete in Athletics, I started when i was 7 and stopped when I was 14. I once got 4th place at the regionals in high jump, jumping 1.4m.

4. I have never had to spend a night in hospital, I have in fact never had any serious injuries or illnesses.

5. When i was about 8 I nearly drowned, while I was canoing with my parents in France. I still like water and swimming though...

6. When I was about 8 or 9 I bugged my mum to sew me a mini-skirt for ages. When she finally did the first thing i tried was climbing a tree...resulting in me up in the tree in my knickers, and the skirt on the ground under the tree. Sums me up pefectly, trying to be girly-girl somehow, but it just doesn't work for me!

7. There is a bigger age gap between me and my little sister (21 years), than between my parents and myself (19 years)

I'm not gonna tag anybody for this, as most people on my friends list have done it already. But if you are feeling left our consider yourself tagged :o)

Back from the USA

So, here finally an update from me...

I was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the last four days at the 76th annual conference of the AAPA (American Association of Physical Anthropologists). It was a huge conference with about 1500 people present. Lots of talks to listen to, and lots of posters to read. The members of Regia will be glad to here, that we featured on a poster about warrior status in Anglo-Saxon England, as an example how spears were used.
My poster went down well, none of the "big" anthropologists had anything bad to say about my work, which is good. Although nobody could tell me anything new about my surgery cases, which I was hoping somebody could. My supervisor introduced me to lots of the people who wrote most of the text books that are sitting on my shelf!
I also got a free rucksack, and lots of pens, and the hotel where the conference was at, rolled out coffee, tea and cakes every morning during the break.
We went sightseeing around Philly, which is like THE historical city in the US, meaning everything is like 300 years old... We saw the original congress hall, and the liberty bell and lots of other buildings. Statues of George Washington and Barry (it was a statue that just said Barry on it, who apparently founded the US Navy). My supervisor and I also decided to have a wander round the old cemetery, which was next to our hotel, thinking "cool dead people". As it turns out, it was the cemetery where Benjamin Franklin and four other signers of the Declaration of Independence were buried. Which means I was sleeping 10-15m from Franklin's grave. Cool!
I also had a Philly cheese stake, apparently their specialty, and though it was nice enough, it was basically a roast beef sandwich with cheese.
The tip of the week was, if you go to look at a submarine, do NOT take your suitcase with you....

All together an enjoyable and exciting experience! But damn that jet-lag...

Lots of horsey fun this morning! And more tomorrow! Lukas and I got slightly more demanding horses this time round, but as both our riding has improved lots over the last few months it went really well. Ginie was on the same horse, and she can ride well anyway... We managed to ride in formation with lots of tight turns in both walk and trot. Because the horses have a bit of "me first I'm the fastest" mentality we didn't try it in canter. But hopefully we will get round to doing that tomorrow. So rock on three hours of chainmail on a horse! And weapons tomorrow! All very exciting!

Stupid f***king roadworks

There have been roadworks going on on our road for the last week or so, now they are digging directly in front of our house...which is annoying, but you can live with it....
So, I came back from my riding lesson (which went really well...) made myself a pizza, and ate it, as you do. Then i wanted to wash my hands, but NO WATER. Usually if they are working on the water supply, they post a leaflet telling you the water might be off, again annoying but you live with it. Today, no note. So I looked outside and there is a big hole in the road with a muddy geyser coming out of it, and three puzzled builders standing around it.
So I called mid kent water and told them what was going on, they had no idea about it but said they'll try and sort asap.
The one thing that did cheer me up, was seeing the builders lying over the hole trying to fix the leak and getting the muddy water sprayed into their faces :oD

So I'm just hoping they get the water back on soon, i really do not want to have to spend a whole weekend without running water... and knowing builders they might just go home for the weekend...

I have to fill out an ethics form so I can start my data collection... Lots of very stupid questions, but the best one is "Are there participants who may wish to be named and acknowledged?" Answer: No
Next question: "If "No" how will the anonymity of informants be maintained?"
Answer: They are DEAD.
Equally as stupid a question was how I would present my results to the participants...Now that would be a cheerful presentation in front of 40 skeletons (plus another 130 if I get my other population).

They really should adapt there ethics forms to different types of research, this social anthropology form doesn't ask me about any ethics that do affect my research, but instead lots of silly questions....

ARRGHH!

It's a very eventfull time at the moment, for me personally.
I'm busy trying to finish my thesis
I am waiting for a letter from the university to see if got the Scholarship which would mean a fully funded PhD, which would be so unbelievably fantastic.
And we are getting a car! Finally being mobile, and needing to organise lifts to shows and being able to offer lifts will be good. Also not being stuck in Canterbury all the time will be nice. However that does mean having to sort out all the insurance and stuff is turning out to be a right pain in the you-know-where.
As mentioned my mother is visiting at the moment, parents are sooo much more bareable when they come in small, occasional doses. Although it is lovely to see my little ones again, they grow so fast. She brought me my riding boots, so I'm hoping I will be able to start horse riding again sometime soon.
I am also waiting for my British passport to arrive.
So much happening, but it makes life just that little bit more exciting waiting for all these things to happen.

I'm not too sure how good I will be at updating this journal, but i will deffinately give it a go.
I also just noticed that my name looks a bit odd, it should have been BoneSword. Oh well...

I also hope I will get round to getting more (and better photos) up at some point. That was the best one i had on my pc.

At the moment I'm busy writing my thesis for my MSc in Biological Anthropology. So I might not have much time, but then again it might be a good distraction when I'm bored or stressed.
